Editor’s Note: Edward has had experience Rebooting since he first saw “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.” He was able to do a few short Reboots on his own, but he recognized the need for more support to really help him achieve his goal. Determined to get off of his blood pressure and diabetes medications, he signed up for a 60-Day Guided Reboot for Diabetes. With the support of his Guided Reboot nutritionist, Rhaya Jordan, and the support of other participants in his group, he found everlasting success. Here’s what Edward has to say about his inspiring journey.
How did you learn about the Guided Reboot?
I watched “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” when it first came out. I did a 10-Day Reboot on my own way back then and did two others over the next couple of years. Then the second movie came out and I signed up on the website and started getting their emails. That’s when I saw the 60-Day Guided Reboot for [type 2] diabetes.
What inspired you to sign up?
Having done three separate 10-days on my own, and being inspired by the movies, I knew the program worked. But it is hard! I really want to get off my meds for high blood pressure and diabetes, but even more I want to gain control over my health. I thought that somehow doing it in a group with a guide / coach would help me get through the 60 days…I don’t think I could do it alone. I needed accountability.
How did the experience go for you?
Well, 60 days is a long time when you’re looking at it from the first couple of weeks. But the people I met in our group and our leader, Rhaya Jordan, always being available, gave me strength to persevere. I tried to write and respond to everyone in our group several times a week. This connection to a group of people going through the same experience really made it a great experience. The encouragement and challenges others were going through, sharing all the difficulties made the experience more real and I felt I was not suffering alone.
Did you have any noticeable health or physical improvements?
Yes! I had gone to my doctor before starting the program and had lab work done and [received] advice on how [to prevent] muscle spasms, along with how to cut back my blood pressure meds if needed. I took my blood pressure almost every day and sometime during the third week I started to feel faint. I needed to reduce my blood pressure medication to half of what it was. My blood sugar numbers also fell from 150 – 200 down to a consistent 70 – 100. I’m due for an annual physical and will see about reducing the diabetic meds next. Also during the 60 days I lost 32 pounds, going from 230 pounds to 198 pounds.
I’m feeling better today than I have in years.
What was the toughest part?
Social events. Food is everywhere in our culture. I had to clear most of my schedule with friends and events because for me I did not want to be in an environment where great food was being served and consumed “in mass quantities.” I didn’t go to the movies or ball games; going to the grocery store where people are all buying comfort food while free samples were given out was hard. I felt like an alien from outer space who was observing people at the grocery store thinking I could never eat that food again.
What habits have you maintained and kept in part of daily life?
I think my story is a lot like Joe’s. When I’m juicing I can feel deprived and like I’m in “food jail.” But the program works. I try to eat much healthier, but won’t get down on myself if I have a bad day or two. I simply get back on track with all the tools and choices I learned during the Guided Reboot. Having worked so hard and feeling so much better it’s actually easier to keep weight off. The biggest tool I have or habit I’m maintaining is that I will do a 10-day Reboot as needed. Believe me, once you get to an ideal weight and feel good, your body will tell you when it’s time to Reboot again and get back on track.
What is your lasting impression of the Guided Reboot experience?
The thing that comes to mind first is all the people in our group. We are not in this alone. We all share the same goals and want to become healthy again. Hearing about the struggles and challenges others were going through and knowing we were doing this together made the program totally worth the cost. Rhaya was always an email away and was great at giving individual attention to everyone in our group of 52 Rebooters. The webinars were a great source of information that gave us tools to help us through the program. Of course it’s also about how much effort you’re willing to contribute. In life you get as much as you put into it and sometimes you get back much more.
