Mary-Ann Reboots to Reach Her Goal Weight & Land Her Dream Job

Name:  Mary-Ann
Reboot: 30 Days
Age: 20’s

What inspired you to do a Reboot?
Since I was 15 years old I have been in the obese range for my height. I am 5’9 and weighed 225-258 lbs. (100 – 116 kg.) all through high school. Even though I have been vegetarian for a few years, I was still heavy. When I started classes at my university I weighed my most at 258 lbs. (116 kg.) and a size 18 pant. I was miserable. I felt very awkward around my friends because I was always the heaviest person which made me not want to dress up and go out and do things with them. So as an alternative to going out, I decided to go to the campus gym where I fell in love with rock climbing! This was the first step to changing my life. I changed my major to recreation management and started focusing my energy into adventure education. I lost 41 lbs./19 kg. in 4 months of climbing and I felt fantastic. Then I hit a stand still, my weight did not go back up but it was no longer dropping. So for a year and a half I was stuck at 217 lbs./98 kg., still in the obese range. I was not getting the recreation jobs I wanted or needed because of my weight. Even though I was well qualified for the rec jobs I interviewed for but I still would not get them because I did not look like someone who specialized in recreation. I knew I needed to change my life further, so this past summer I took a job at a camp in the sierras as a paddle sports instructor and changed my diet even further. I have an allergy to dairy so I completely removed it from my diet while I worked at the camp. When I finished my work in August I was stunned when I stepped on the scale and saw that I was 191 lbs./87 kg.! The first time I was under 200lbs since I as 15! This was a huge step and I knew that now getting down to my ideal weight of 150 lb./68 kg. was achievable! While searching through Netflix one day I came across FSND. I had tried to watch the documentary a year before but got bored of it after about 20 minutes and shut it off. This time I decided to watch the whole thing through, and am I glad I did! Two hours later I was ordering my juicer and Joe’s book from amazon!

How did the experience go for you?
At first it was really hard, the first few days I craved all sorts of food, even meat (and I am a strict vegetarian). After a while though it became a norm! I really enjoyed the juice and I became more comfortable with trying new ones. I am now going into my second 30 reboot to lose the last 18.8 lbs/9 kg. I have to go to reach 150lbs/68 kg.

How much weight did you lose (even if that wasn’t your goal!)?
Total I have lost 89.2lbs/40 kg. over the last two years. Over the last 6 months I have lost 48.2/22 kg. (22.2 from juicing for 30 days). I now weigh 168.8lbs and am in a size 9 pant.

Did you have any notable health or physical improvements?
I have always been a very active person and very recreational, but knowing I am and looking like I am has made the biggest difference in the world. Ready to go out and get those outdoor recreation jobs I am qualified for!

What was the toughest part about the Reboot experience?
The first three days are pure torture. I would not recommend watching tv or going on facebook. I would count pizza and burger commercial (and I do not eat either of those) and every food post from my friends would send me off the edge of misery. I would also just google pictures of food. I had it bad! It is also really hard when my family was making real food and I couldn’t eat it too.

What habits have you maintained and kept a part of your everyday life?
I am continuing to juice for another 30 days, this time a little different than before. I do eat two small real meals a week to add a little more protein and fiber into my diet (no breads though) but I think as soon as I am done I will continue to eat much healthier than I have in the past. I took a week off between Reboots and I found that I did not crave the foods I did before. Eating a meal the size I normally would have would make me sick during that week, so my appetite has reduced hugely which is good because I am a bored eater and I have no desire for snacks.

What is your lasting impression of the Reboot experience?
Though it was tough, I do not regret it at all and I am excited to lose the last bit 🙂 I am ready for all my friends to see the hard work I have done when I return to school!
